We hope you like our site about our subtropical garden in Devon, and if you have previously visited the garden we would love to hear your feedback. The site is constantly* being updated and added to so please come back and see what we've been up to.I have tried to make the site easier to use by putting a lot of the photos in galleries. This makes it easier to load the other pages. Let me know what you think.

The view from the gate

We have been opening our garden for the past five years in aid of various charities. The garden is 100ft by 50ft and the soil is heavy clay. Our part of Devon experiences some frost, but rarely below -5 degrees Celsius or lasting more than a couple of days. During these openings we have been asked for more details about the plants and garden. Neither of us has any qualifications in horticulture so any information here is based on our own limited experience and what we have gleaned from experts. Incidentally all photos on this site were taken in our garden and greenhouses. We hope you enjoy the site and hope to see some of you at our openings. We would welcome any feedback on the plants or the garden.

Garden Openings 2009

We will not be opening for the NGS this year as we have had some work done on the garden, some necessary sewage work which involved digging up the main tropical bed. The cold winter has also cut the biggest banana back to ground level so a recovery period is needed. However I have been asked to do a talk to the Great Torrington gardening club in early September and will be opening for them.

If you are going to be in the area and want to visit then give us a call, with a bit of notice we can probably open for you. We will be open for the NGS again next year (if they'll have us) as we have used the year off to make some more improvements to the garden. I'll put some pictures up later.

News!

Check out the pictures of some new passiflora including the wonderful P 'Anastasia' and the underwhelming P caerulea 'Merrion' as well as aristolochia grandiflora and some new hedychium pictures. For 2009 we have got a new and better camera as the old one had problems doing the close-ups of the passion flowers. We have now got some new passiflora in from Germany including the wonderful 'Crimson Tears', 'Byron Beauty', 'Inspiration' and the rare and endangered parritae. Pictures will follow in due course.

Here are some pictures to give you an idea of our style of gardening

We have no lawn at all. Instead we have various mulches on liner covering the improved (with mushroom compost and horse manure) soil.

We have a large range of hedychiums

and bananas

The garden also features cottage garden and prairie plants including a collection of rudbeckias
